JOB SUMMARY:
Leisureworld Caregiving Centre – Rockcliffe is home to 204 residents and currently has an opening for a Permanent Part-Time Cook (22.50 Hrs/Bi-Weekly).

As a valued member of the team, the Cook demonstrates a commitment to resident safety by providing quality care in accordance with organization’s vision and mission.

RESPONSIBILITIES (But not limited to):
• Preparing food in accordance with the regular and therapeutic menu, in accordance with the standardized recipes for the home.
• Assisting in serving of meals to residents (by name of resident).
• Preparing quantities of food needed to meet menu requirements as per recipes and production sheets.
• Cleaning and maintaining the fridge / freezer, cleaning and maintaining all equipment after use.
• Cleaning and maintaining work area(s) in a clean and sanitary state.
• Following safe food handling practices.
• Quality control of menu products – for example, tasting samples, labelling and keeping daily samples for testing for 7 days, monitor and discard samples as per policy.
• Assists in catering to special functions when scheduled.
• Takes and records food temperatures, and records the same in the food temperature logs. Follows up with corrective action if temperatures are not within ranges noted on temperature logs.
• Assures all food items are labelled and dated in fridges and freezers, monitors and discards as per policy.
• Supports the cleaning requirements and cleaning routines of the dietary services including, washing potspans, operating dish machine when needed/as schedule, cleaning and sanitizing work areas according the established schedule.
• Assists in orientation of new dietary staff.
• Assists in the home’s quality management/quality improvement program for dietary services.
• Manages the kitchen on weekends and in the absence of Director of Dietary Services for the respective shift.
• Attends in-service education programs and staff meetings.
• Leisureworld is a 24/7 operation, flexibility to work a variety of shifts as required operationally.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Must have a current Food Handler’s Certificate.
• At least 1 year experience as a cook in the Food Service Industry.
• Red Seal Designation preferred.
• Must be knowledgeable with respect to the nutritional and other appropriate needs of geriatric residents.
• Must be familiar with the location of supplies and equipment used to carry out duties as well as appropriate policies and procedures.
• Must also understand the basis of good sanitation and food handling techniques to avoid infection of the spread of contagious illnesses.
• Able to cook a variety of foods in large quantities and plan work.
• Able to follow recipes and production sheets
• Able to operate industrial kitchen equipment.
• Must be familiar with safe food handling techniques.
• Able to follow written and oral instructions.
• Must show initiative and good judgment. Must be aware of potential risk factors that could develop as a result of improper and/or inappropriate food preparation and/or handling and unsafe working practices.
• Must be mature and possess good communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to exercise tact and diplomacy in dealing with residents, staff and visitors. Must be in good physical and mental health.
• Must have effective verbal and written English communication skills.

EDUCATION:
• Chef training or culinary management diplomas from a program that meets the standard established by the Ministry of Training, Colleges, and Universities.
